Romanian Parliament votes to suspend President
printable versionbigger textsmaller text

Romania's Parliament has voted to suspend the President over claims he violated the constitution. A majority of deputies and senators voted in favour of the suspension of Traian Basescu. A commission supported by the opposition Social Democrat Party had accused Basescu of undermining the government, ordering illegal telephone tapping and criticising judges.

The decision means there must be a referendum within a month, in which the Romanian public will decide whether to impeach their President. If, however, Basescu resigns, as he had vowed to do, there will be a snap presidential election within three months. The constitutional court had cleared the Head of State of any wrong-doing, but opposition leaders said judges were pressured into doing so.
